This past week of cornhole was pretty eventful. Decided to do a BYOP Tourney on a Monday afternoon with my boy djay at a local venue right inside of mustang island with the guys from Bluff rat cornhole. I was second guessing going at first since I had a long day of work, but said screw it and made the hour long drive to try our luck. We started 2-1 in rounders losing to a great team that got hit quick and us not able to get our stride. We usually throw fallouts but had to switch to CS Fierces after noticing how sticky the boards got with the humidity. We made another great run getting 4th place and eventually running out of gas at the end. We weren’t throwing our greatest, but still managed to get a good finish to the night. Probably won’t be doing a weekday tourney like that after coming home around midnight.
fast forward to Wednesday for league nights in robstown. We had another solid night going 3-1 losing our only match on the live stream to our buddies from high voltage. They were making great shots and we made the mistake of going with newish fallouts that threw off our game a bit. Regardless of that outcome we both were throwing fairly well and know what we need to do to get better. I recently went back to stepping while throwing after noticing my game go down a little and not feeling very comfortable with a balanced stance. I was throwing consistent airmails but my push game was horrible to the point that I needed to make a switch. I originally started off with a stepping throw when I first got into cornhole and was doing great, but thought I needed to be more still when I throw and not having too many moving parts (got the idea from a few YouTube videos). After awhile I just decided I need to go back to my basics and do what I feel comfortable with. Since then I felt my game improve and feel more comfortable with my push shots and even airmails. I’m a very hyper person and it’s hard for me to stand around so I thinking keeping this tempo and moving more will help my game more.
To end the week my wife and I visited her family in Pharr,Tx for Mother’s Day. Spend the day at top golf with the in-laws and randomly met up with my boy ralphie from team GasPack who happened to be there with his mom as well. Had to snap a picture of us randomly meeting up there and spent the rest of the day drinking beer and hitting some golf balls. While leaving back Sunday I decided to call up my buddies pancho and Ab from 956 cornhole to throw a few bags and catch up. I had been practicing my new throw style the past week and wanted to try it out to see if there was an improvement. We met the guys at fast Eddie’s and started to set up the boards and get right to it. To my surprise I felt real confident and comfortable with my new throw style and only lost 1 game out of over 10. These guys aren’t just intermediate throwers they are some of the best throwers in the lower south texas area, so of course I grew some confidence after grinding to get some wins. Regardless of winning or losing I like to catch up with the fellas there and see how progression with the leagues and tourneys are going and show support whenever I can. They took me in when I first started and I’ve always appreciated them for that. Overall it was a great Sunday afternoon and finally found a little pep in my step and look forward to the next tourney or league night!
